ADempiere is a fork of the Compiere Open Source ERP system which came into being in September 2006 due to differences between large sections of the Compiere Community and Compiere Inc.
In the meantime ADempiere is one of the 10 most successful open source projects on sourceforge.net.
ADempiere is licensed under the GPL and in contrast to Compiere works according to the bazaar principle (see also www.catb.org/~esr/writings/cathedral-bazaar/cathedral-bazaar/), i.e. additions and extensions can be integrated into the system by every member of the community.
Schaeffer AG utilizes ADempiere productively and actively participates in the further development of the software.
